Taking care of yourself naturally – coconut oil

We all like to be healthy and to look good. With supermarket shelves full of colourful bottles, pots and tubes, we end up using many personal care products to look and feel healthy. Although these products can temporarily improve our looks, in the long term they can cause more harm than good. We tend to believe that our beauty depends on them and we are often not aware that most of the products have a high chemical content and can cause various health issues if used regularly for a long time.

A few years ago I discovered a truly amazing product – coconut oil! It has so many health benefits that it is hard to believe. It is said to strengthen the immune system, prevent high cholesterol and blood pressure levels, help heal damaged tissues, liver and kidney diseases; it promotes nutrient absorption, increases metabolism, helps maintain a healthy weight and much more! And it tastes great too! In addition, it can be your universal beauty product – you can use it pretty much for everything and anything!

Body moisturiser and massage oil

Coconut oil serves as a great moisturiser and a massage oil. When coconut oil is applied on skin it helps skin get rid of harmful bacteria and fungus which breed on it thus saving body from infectious diseases. It is rich in vitamin E which is well known to nourish skin and make it smoother and softer. Coconut oil is easily absorbed by body and leaves no stains. Massage with coconut oil can soothe and relax tight muscles in your body. This is great if you are tired due to physical activity. In addition, pure coconut oil has mild coconut aroma which is just great!

I have been using raw organic coconut oil instead of day and night creams for a good couple of year now and my skin never felt better. It acts as a moisturiser on all types of skin and unlike other beauty products, it doesn’t cause any unpleasant side effects. If you have dry skin, it is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. It leaves your skin nourished and balanced if you have oily or normal skin. And of course it is perfect for combination skin – it balances the areas that feel too oily and at the same time softens and eliminates any dryness. Coconut oil is helpful in making skin look younger. Along with vitamins present in it, its anti-oxidant effect also plays an important part in this process. Warm the oil between the palms of your hands and simply apply to your face twice a day.

Face massage

In the mornings try massaging your face with coconut oil – forehead, cheeks, jaws, lips. Make sure your hands are super clean (touching your face with dirty hands may cause spots). Massage gently around the eyes too – with circular movements from inner to outer corners and back, repeat a few times. It is the best eye cream ever, believe me, I tried a lot of products! After the massage tap your face gently with your fingertips. Then wipe your face with a dry towel to remove the excessive oil.

Coconut oil face massage provides all benefits of the oil and helps remove dead cells and improve the elasticity of your skin by increasing the blood circulation in the massaged areas. It is really energising; it wakes you up and leaves you feel refreshed. In addition, the massage stimulates acupressure points improving overall wellbeing.

Spots and acne

Coconut oil has antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties making it safe to use if you have spots or acne. Penetrating into the skin, coconut oil helps get rid of germs and bacteria and neutralises the inflammation. Coconut oil for skin acne has regenerating and clarifying properties.

You can use it as a hand cream – you only need a tiny amount of oil. Remove the excessive oil with a dry towel. Our skin absorbs coconut oil very easily and quickly so don’t worry about leaving oily stains around you!

Coconut oil is an effective hair treatment. If you are experiencing hair loss or your hair is dry, damaged or simply looks dull, coconut oil can help you improve the looks. It prevents breakage, moisturises your hair and boosts blood circulation in the head area. In addition, it is rich in nutrients and has antibacterial properties. Coconut oil stimulates hair growth and makes your hair softer and healthier.

Either warm the oil between the palms of your hands or in a small jar by placing it in warm water. Massage the oil into your hair with your fingertips, ensuring you work it into the hair follicles by applying to the roots. To get the full benefit, massage for a good few minutes. Leave overnight  before washing off for a deep-conditioning treatment, or for at least 30-40 minutes (the longer the better!) for an intensive condition. Apply to dry hair. Massage twice a week.

If you have split ends, warm a tiny amount of oil between the palms of your hands and lightly run your hands through the ends of your hair. Apply to dry clean hair.

Coconut oil pulling

Coconut oil pulling is one of the best ways to remove bacteria and promote healthy teeth and gums. Oil pulling involves swishing oil around the mouth, using it like a mouthwash. It has been used for thousands of years as a famous Ayurvedic remedy. In order to oil pull, you put a tablespoon of oil in your mouth, then swish it around for 10-20 minutes.

Oil pulling works by cleaning or rather detoxifying the oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally sucks the toxins out of your mouth and creates a clean, antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that is needed to prevent cavities and disease.

Coconut oil pulling benefits:

  • Cures tooth decay
  • Eliminates bad breath
  • Heals bleeding gums
  • Prevents heart disease
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Whitens teeth
  • Soothes throat dryness
  • Prevents cavities
  • Heals cracked lips
  • Boosts immune system
  • Improves acne
  • Strengthens gums and jaw

Coconut oil toothpaste

According to numerous researches, a case can be made that coconut oil has a near-perfect makeup to act as an effective toothpaste. Five top reasons, as reported by researchers:

  1. No harmful chemicals
  2. Effective against cavity-causing bacteria
  3. No foaming agents
  4. Inexpensive
  5. Simple to make

You can either try using a mixture of coconut oil and sea salt or prepare your own toothpaste using coconut oil, baking soda and some essential oils.

In addition, coconut oil can be safely used as a lubricant thanks to its anti-bacterial properties. There is a difference of opinion on this, but I believe that coconut oil is definitely better and safer than most of the lubricant products sold in the shops. Some popular lubes contain harmful substances such as parabens, glycerin, etc. Do your own research and try it for yourself.

Taking care of your body naturally, without using harsh chemicals, is your gift to yourself. Although the best medicine for the mind-body is peace of mind, it is important to look after our physical body too. And taking a good care of ourselves is an expression of love and nothing can make you feel better than that!
